    Getting around

    Public Transport

Gothenburg’s main mode of public transport is the tram – a slow but inexpensive way to see the city. Buying tickets from drivers was banned in 2009, so all must be purchased beforehand. Although single fares are available, it’s usually easier to pick up a Västtrafik card which lasts for one, three or seven days and allows you unlimited travel. The same ticket also covers Gothenburg’s extensive bus network.

Cabs are easy to pick up but are eye-wateringly expensive and unregulated which means, fare-wise, almost anything goes. Taxi Göteborg (tel: (031) 650 000; www.taxigoteborg.se) is the main provider.

    Hotels in Gothenburg

Central Gothenburg has a variety of accommodation to suit all budgets, from boutique boltholes and fancy five-star sanctuaries to hip hostels and home stays.

Pricier hotels are dotted around the Central Station with plenty more options across the other side of the Stora Hamn Canal.
