How to get there
The best way to travel in to the city center from the airport is via Hongyu Elevated Road, which you follow as far as the intersection with the G50 Huyu Expressway before continuing west from there. The expressway later becomes Yan’an Elevated Road, which runs via Jing’an to Huangpu and then through a tunnel to Pudong.
Many of the larger hotels provide a shuttle service to and from the airport. Public buses also run regularly between the stops outside both terminal buildings and the city center. A reliable service is provided on most routes between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. A night bus from the airport to People’s Square via Jing’an Temple is also available between 10.30 p.m. until 45 minutes after the last landing at Terminal 2.
The stop for intercity buses to destinations including Suzhou, Nan Jing and Hongzhou is located outside Terminal 1.
Taxis are available outside both terminal buildings. The journey into downtown Shanghai takes roughly 45 minutes (depending on the traffic). A nighttime surcharge is payable between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. Travelers are recommended to use only licenced taxis and always to make sure that the meter is switched on. Useful tip: Not all taxi drivers can speak or read English, so it’s wise to always take along your destination address written down in Chinese.
The airport is right next door to Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. From there, hi-speed bullet trains depart for a number of cities, including Beijing (roughly six hours’ travel time), Hangzhou (roughly 90 minutes) and Nanjing (roughly two hours).
The new Terminal 2 is served by Metro lines 2 (via People’s Square, among others to Pudong International Airport) and 10 (Huahai Road, Yu-Garden, Hongkou and Wujiaochang).
Short- and long-stay parking is available in front of the terminal buildings. Parking lots P6 and P7 belong to terminal building 2.
