Rijeka - a brief overview
Rijeka, Croatia’s third-largest city after Zagreb and Split, is located along the Opatija Riviera on Kvarner Bay. During the second half of the 19th century, Rijeka grew into one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. Alongside Opatija, it was a popular winter residence for Austro-Hungarian nobility. Restored art nouveau buildings stand alongside classical buildings and modern architecture as a testament to the city’s glamorous past. In addition to the harbor, the driving forces of the city are now primarily the
university and tourism. The Korzo promenade invites visitors to linger and shop, while the fortress hill Trsat offers a fantastic view of the bay and the islands of Krk and Cres just off the city’s coast. The colorful cultural scene has plenty to offer, and it will grow more attractive with every passing month, as Rijeka was selected to be the European Capital of Culture for 2020, alongside Galway in Ireland.

Country information
Country overview
Croatia is one of the most popular travel destinations in Europe, thanks in large part to its coasts and more than 1,000 islands, which are a special paradise for swimmers, water sports enthusiasts and divers. The Kornati Archipelago off the central Adriatic Coast is particularly popular. In Dalmatia, the southern part of the country, Split and Dubrovnik have beautifully preserved historic downtowns that make them attractive destinations.
But the country’s inland regions also have a lot to offer. The capital city of Zagreb is always a draw, with its countless museums and vibrant cultural life, its medieval buildings and its Habsburg-era architecture. The Plitvička Jezera national park, the Plitvice lakes region surrounded by the Dinaric Alps between Zagreb and Zadar, is a major tourist attraction thanks to its waterfalls.
Geography
Croatia borders Hungary and Slovenia to the north and Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to the east. The southern tip of the country shares a short border with Montenegro. The Dinaric Alps separate the Adriatic region from the central European, continental part of the country. This region stretches from the eastern borders of the Alps in the northwest of the country to the banks of the Danube in the east. This also includes the southern part of the fertile Pannonian Basin. The country has an extensive coast along the Adriatic Sea, including the port cities of Rijeka, Pula, Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Dubrovnik.
The peninsula of Istria is located on the northern coast, separated from Dalmatia by Kvarner Bay with its vacation islands of Krk and Rab. The southern coast is divided into northern, central, and southern Dalmatia. The country’s hilly inland includes the region of Zagorje and extends east from Zagreb to the Serbian border.

River of time
The Croatian port designated a European Capital of Culture 2020 boasts a mosaic of Baroque, concrete and post-industrial architecture as well as a vibrant cultural scene. The concert halls, theaters and exhibition spaces in the center of Rijeka stage a host of events – but what happens along the Rječina River,
which emerges north of Rijeka and flows south into the Mediterranean, and to a certain extent – “Rijeka” translates as “river” in English – gave the city its name? We follow the course of the Rječina, which takes us from the old to the new Rijeka, from the industrial age to the city’s cosmopolitan present.
Zakalj Mill
51000 Rijeka
Croatia
Show on map
We set out from the ruins of a watermill overgrown with ivy in the forest. The Rječina’s hydropower was used to grind grain here right up to World War I, and the flour thus produced was sent to Germany and exported to as far away as Brazil. Typically for the region, there was a pasta factory in the mill’s immediate vicinity for the convenience of receiving fresh flour supplies. In the sunshine today, a curious sense of tranquility emanates from the mill, which in its heyday employed more than 100 workers to operate its noisy machines.
The old Hartera paper mill
51000 Rijeka
Croatia
Show on map
The lovely thing about old factory buildings is that they spark our imagination. Over a period of 150 years Hartera employed up to 1000 employees for the screening and pressing of pulp to make paper; the mill’s main product was cigarette paper. After the Yugoslav War, Hartera became bankrupt in 2002, and the building has been falling into disrepair ever since. The huge complex with its tall arched windows, antique tiles and colorfully painted doors and stairways is a fine example of industrial architecture. Plans to transform the old paper mill into a culture center have long existed, but the funds to realize them are lacking. For the time being, the mill is to be used as a backdrop for several international films.
The Tunel club
51000 Rijeka
Croatia
Show on map
The entrance to the club is a semicircular brick archway with finely wrought gratings in front of the windows – the Tunel is located beneath a railway embankment. The drinks are cheap, the music spans techno and jazz, and the club hosts regular live gigs, raves and parties. If you are looking to drink and dance with the locals, this is the place for you.
Konoba Fiume
51000 Rijeka
Croatia
Tel.: +385-51/31 21 08
Show on map
Open:
Mon-Fri: 0700-1800
Sat: 0700-1500
“Konoba” is the Croatian name for small restaurants that serve good home cooking and Croatian fare. And even though the Fiume is not right on the river, the reason we are making an exception by including it here is its name, because “Fiume” is not only the city’s Italian name, but also the Italian word for “river.” Within her rustic walls across from the market hall, innkeeper Nena serves simple and very good fish dishes at lunchtime; but come in the evening and you will find the door closed. Meals are ordered solely on the cook’s recommendation, as the Fiume has no menu – but it does stock some excellent Croatian white wines.
Mala Galerija Bruketa
51000 Rijeka
Croatia
Tel.: +385-51/33 54 03
Show on map
Lampstands, clocks and watches, cups, sculptures – patterned or gold-plated: Ceramics are the big thing at the Bruketa gallery, which is hardly surprising as it was with ceramics that it all started. In 1974, Vladimir Bruketa and his wife returned here from London and opened the first private art gallery in Yugoslavia with earthenware they crafted and fired themselves. Today, the gallery also sells statement necklaces and rings. In a second gallery, the daughters of the owner couple provide an exhibition space for young Rijekan artists.
Three Monkeys Bar
51000 Rijeka

Mon-Thu 0600 to 0000
Fri, Sat 0600 to 0000
Sun 1400-2300
Since opening in November 2018, this small cocktail bar has been injecting hipster charm into the southern part of the city and introducing Croatians to cocktails. The highlights here are the bar’s light-bulb installation, its massive lever coffee machine (that turns out really good coffee), and the well-mixed drinks that are served in chunky crystal glasses here in the evening, as well as an extensive selection of spirits and occasionally also live music.

Fine view from the castle
Trsat Castle offers the best view over Rijeka and Kvarner Bay. The castle, one of the biggest fortresses on the Adriatic, stands 139 meters high above the Rječina River. From Titov Trg square on the river’s eastern bank, you have a climb of over 500 steps up the Petra Kruzica pilgrim’s stairway to get there – alternatively, you could take the public bus service from the main square, Trg Bana Josipa Jelačića. Once at the top of the hill, you will find the fortress and a Franciscan monastery, as well as Gospa Trsatska, the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat. In the summer months, open-air concerts and exhibitions are held there.

The best time to visit the coastal regions is late spring or fall, particularly for outdoor enthusiasts. During those seasons, the Adriatic is warm enough for diving, swimming, surfing and sailing, but it’s not too hot for city tours or hikes.
Summer is the tourist high season throughout the country, when the beach resort towns and cities along the Adriatic Coast, like Rijeka, Dubrovnik and Split, are especially popular with visitors.

Social Conventions
Croatians are proud of their young nation, which has been a member of the EU since 2013. It is considered inappropriate for foreigners to comment on the country’s socialist or even fascist past. The Austrian and Italian traditions that have influenced local culture place great emphasis on politeness, but they also encompass a zest for life. Croatians are generally very warm and welcoming hosts. They are usually thrilled if you even attempt to use a few words of Croatian. Soccer is the top national sport in Croatia (the national team took second place in the 2018 World Cup), so soccer and sports in general are a good subject for small talk. For business appointments, formal clothing is generally expected. Swimwear should only be worn at the pool and the beach.
Smoking
Smoking is strictly prohibited in all public buildings. Special rules apply to restaurants; when in doubt, ask the staff if smoking is permitted.
Tipping
The bill should be rounded up in hotels, restaurants, and taxis. A ten-percent tip is customary.

Food & Drink
The tap water is generally chlorinated and relatively clean, but drinking it may still cause mild digestive issues. For this reason, mineral water is recommended for the first few weeks of your stay; it is available everywhere. When purchasing water, check that the original packaging is properly sealed.
Take care when eating undercooked pork (in dishes such as ground meat kebabs and sausages). Some regions of the country report cases of trichinosis (a parasitic infection) year-round. Meat that is cooked well-done poses no infection risk.
Other Risks
There is the risk of contracting Lyme disease from ticks from April to October throughout Croatia, especially in grasses, shrubs and undergrowth. The risk can be minimized by wearing clothing that covers the skin and by using insect repellent.
Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is also transmitted by ticks. A vaccination is available for this disease.
Cases of hepatitis A and hepatitis B also occur throughout the country. A vaccination to protect against hepatitis A is generally advisable. For longer visits or visits involving close contact with the local population, or with children and young people, the hepatitis B vaccine is recommended.
Leishmaniasis, a parasitic infection transmitted by the sand fly, occurs in summer and fall in the coastal regions of the south and on the islands. The risk can be minimized by wearing clothing that covers the skin and by using insect repellent.
Rabies is present throughout Croatia. Carriers include dogs, cats, forest animals and bats. Vaccinations are advised for backpackers, children, those at risk for vocational reasons, and those staying in Croatia for longer periods. Victims of animal bites should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
